Bridging the Gap in Financial Leadership

Every business needs strong financial leadership.  Sometimes this means bringing in targeted financial expertise for a particular time or project.  This could be to cover the absence of a permanent Finance Director (FD), or to work alongside the existing FD to carry out a specific project.  Whatever the reason, this is where a Secantor Interim FD comes in to bring a combination of financial and commercial acumen to your senior leadership team exactly when and where you need it.

What is an Interim FD?

An Interim Finance Director (IFD) is a highly experienced finance professional who is appointed on a short-term or temporary basis to provide leadership or targeted support to a company's finance function. Also known as an Interim Chief Financial Officer (Interim CFO), they are called upon in a variety of situations, including company restructuring, company growth, absence of a permanent finance director, or any other situation that requires an experienced finance professional to step in and provide support.

Secantor IFDs each have many years of experience working as an FD in a variety of different sectors and situations which enables them to immediately grasp your requirements and plan & implement the right solution for your business.

What does an Interim FD do?

When standing in for a permanent FD, a Secantor IFD will oversee all financial operations, including budgeting, forecasting, cash management, financial reporting, and risk management.  Where an existing FD needs targeted support, a Secantor IFD will lead a specific finance-related project such as such as: detailed financial forecasting or planning, preparing a business for acquisition, merger or sale; migrating to new accountancy software; or for undertaking in-depth financial investigation or analysis to solve a particular problem.

What are the benefits of an Interim FD?

One of the greatest advantages of having an Interim Finance Director is that they provide a fresh perspective, bringing valuable experience and expertise to the table. They are equipped to handle complex financial issues and provide valuable insights into best practices and industry standards.  In situations where there may be internal conflicts or disagreements, an Interim FD can provide objective recommendations that are in the best interests of the business.

An experienced Secantor IFD can quickly assess a company's financial situation and provide sound recommendations for improvement. This includes identifying areas for cost savings, improving financial reporting, and implementing financial controls. In addition, Secantor IFDs can provide support during the transition period to a permanent finance director, including helping with the recruitment process to check your preferred candidate is up to the task technically.

The role of an IFD is not just limited to financial management. Secantor IFDs are commercially focused so they also play a critical role in business strategy and decision-making, working closely with you and your fellow directors and other stakeholders to help drive growth and improve performance.

A Secantor IFD will also help your business to streamline its finance function, making it more efficient and effective. This can include reviewing existing processes, implementing new systems and tools, and optimising resource allocation.  The IFD can also work to ensure that the finance function is fully aligned with the overall strategy and goals of your business. In addition, a Secantor IFD can help to build the capacity of the finance function, by providing training and development opportunities for finance staff. This can help to build a more effective, efficient, and well-rounded finance function, which can support your company for years to come.

Why Use an Interim FD?

One of the key benefits of having an IFD is that they can provide a fast, flexible solution to a range of financial and business challenges. For example, if a company is facing a period of rapid growth, a Secantor IFD can provide the expertise and guidance needed to ensure that the finance function is able to keep pace with the demands of the business. Similarly, if a company is undergoing a period of restructuring, a Secantor IFD can provide the leadership and guidance needed to ensure that the finance function continues to operate effectively throughout the process.

Secantor IFDs are well placed to support businesses during periods of uncertainty, such as economic downturns, mergers and acquisitions, or other major business changes. In these situations a Secantor IFD can provide the leadership and expertise needed to navigate the financial implications of these changes and to ensure that the company remains on a stable footing.
